As one of the few cities to do so, Brno was invited to join the advisory group City Science Initiative in 2019, which serves to share experiences from the cooperation of the public and academic spheres and from the use of scientific knowledge in the everyday lives of those living in European cities. During its regular meetings and in its forums, the group focuses on topics like air quality, mental health, mobility and technology in cities, and the creation of communities, and it’s here that the leading cities include Amsterdam, Paris, Salonica, Hamburg, Cluj-Napoca, and the Emilia-Romagna region. The group then submits its findings to the relevant European Union institutions and takes part in the creation of new policies.

With the help of modern technology and innovative approaches, the first smart neighbourhood in Brno will be made. The plan to renovate the Špitálka neighbourhood came about as part of the European project RUGGEDISED, which was launched in 2016, and scheduled to be completed next year. Six cities were united in this project with the goal of showing Europeans how a metropolis can be built that consumes less energy, produces few emissions, is quieter, and overall more enjoyable and considerate to live in. Today, the project’s biggest players are Rotterdam, Umeå, and Glasgow, although Brno, Parma, and Gdansk are also doing their part.

We are a partner and “idea-maker” of the international trade fair URBIS SMART CITY FAIR
The event offers the smart combination of a trade fair and an exclusive conference program where the Smart City leaders can introduce themselves. Over the course of two days, dozens of representatives of Central European cities and towns, as well as leaders in innovation, came together with a single goal: pass along their experience, ideas, and examples of specific solutions to how the Smart City concept should be developed correctly in cities. All of this is done so that the inhabitants can live better lives.
