Children Draw Dreams, Students Build Them: MyMachine Turns Ideas into Real Inventions

Science

Children’s imagination has come to life in Brno for the first time. The pilot year of the international MyMachine programme culminated at the VIDA! Science Centre, where young creators presented their “dream inventions.” What began as a simple drawing has now become a working prototype – from an LED cap that changes colour according to mood to a robot that delivers lunch straight to the table.

More than 400 primary school children, 80 secondary school students, and nearly 40 university students from across the South Moravian Region took part in the project. Its unique concept is built on collaboration: children come up with ideas, university students develop them into designs, and secondary school students transform them into functional models in school workshops or at FabLab Brno. Teams are also supported by industry mentors, and participants visit technology companies and universities throughout the year.

The result of this year’s programme is eight original inventions showcasing both creativity and practical use of technology. Alongside the LED cap, students created, for example, a machine that prepares drinks based on a user’s emotions, a smart school bag, and a multifunctional home robot. The project naturally develops technical and teamwork skills while showing young people that their ideas can have real impact.

MyMachine, which originated more than 20 years ago in Belgium and now runs in over 15 countries, was held in the Czech Republic for the first time this year. It was supported by the South Moravian Region, the city of Brno, and corporate partners. The public can also try out some of the inventions on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the VIDA! Science Centre during the “Dream Inventions” programme.
