The Czech Republic will nominate the famous Mendel manuscript to the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme in 2025. On Thursday, 3 October, the National Commission for UNESCO decided to do so. Mendel’s manuscript, entitled Experiments with Plant Hybrids, is the only surviving evidence of his work with pea hybridisation. This unique world treasure can rightly be counted among the most important documentary heritage of mankind. The final decision will rest with the International Advisory Commission.
Gregor Johann Mendel worked from 1843 at the Augustinian Abbey in Brno, where he established the laws of heredity based on the results of his 9-year-long experiments. These then gave rise to a new branch of science – genetics, the science of heredity. Mendel’s discoveries were confirmed in 1900 and his work received international recognition.
The documentation for the nomination was prepared by Together, a non-profit society that has consistently cared for Mendel’s legacy. The nomination of the internationally recognised manuscript is another important milestone on the road towards the nomination of the Augustinian Abbey in Brno to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Raising public awareness of the manuscript’s nomination may thus contribute to increasing interest in the personality and life story of Gregor Johann Mendel and the places associated with his work.
Memory of the World, a UNESCO programme, was launched in 1992 to preserve and protect the world’s documentary heritage.
