Brno Science and Technology Festival Breaks Records This Year

The September edition of the Brno Science and Technology Festival once again broke records: it expanded to occupy the entire Pavilion A at the Brno Exhibition Centre, and over three festival days, 102 exhibitors managed to spark interest and enthusiasm in more than 15,000 visitors.

This year, the Brno Observatory and Planetarium focused on a visual theme featuring prominent figures in Brno’s scientific history — from Gregor Johann Mendel, Kurt Gödel, Ernst Mach, and Viktor Kaplan, to scientists like anesthesiologist Danuše Táborská and radiobiologist Zdenka Hradečná. Their images decorated not only the pavilion space but also appeared in the smallest details, such as branded buttons.

Exhibitors handed out 4,600 game cards to children for the festival game, and a large number of adult visitors participated in the Genome of Europe project, collectively donating around 2 liters of blood for DNA testing. The project collects DNA data from 100,000 healthy individuals across Europe and is part of a broader initiative to gather data from over 1 million genomes.

The Department of Strategic Development and Cooperation (OSRS MMB), in collaboration with Brno Trade Fairs, organized the City of Brno’s booth on a shared exhibition space with the Observatory. Together, we hosted 13 moderated discussions with experts on topics such as: endangered soil, Antarctic research, students and space technologies, UFOs among us, the secrets of games, getting excited about chemistry, waste sorting, lighting design in architecture, the appeal of science and technology fields, space research and oncology, the European genome, and a documentary featuring the Venus of Dolní Věstonice.

In cooperation with Czech Television Brno Studio, we also presented a film inspired by the founder of genetics titled “Tajemství pana M. – Cesta časem” (translation: The Secret of Mr. M – A Journey Through Time), which will premiere on September 20 on ČT Déčko.

We thank all colleagues not only from the municipal departments OSRS and OŽP, but also from city companies SAKO Brno and Brněnské komunikace, the Brno Observatory and Planetarium, and Brno Trade Fairs, who helped organize the presentation of municipal and city activities and contributed to spreading enthusiasm for science and technology across generations.

And a big thank you goes to the visitors who engaged with the activities at the Brno booth.
